Wondering to Improve (5301 Action Research)

What is Action Research?

Action research or inquiry is a form of investigation to bring about improvement. The investigator searches and analyzes current practices and forms ideas based on experience or data to develop advanced applications. “The inquiry process, based on logical reasoning, requires the collection of information in a systematic way (Harris, Edmonson, & Combs, 2010). In education, the ultimate goal of active research is to improve learning. However, the process may not address learning directly. It may address community involvement, staff development, or school environment to name a few.
The goal of action research is continual and progressive change set in “spirals consisting of refection and action” (Dana, 2009, p.5). The spirals involve diagnostics, strategies, implementation, and clarification advancing to “the next spiral of refection and action” (Dana, 2009, p.5). The practitioner of action research should have an open-mind and promote change. “Examination of the work in not about just finding the right solution to a problem…, it is problem solving based on problem understandinig  (Harris, Edmonson, & Combs, 2010, p.xv). Therefore, the practitioner needs the expertise and background knowledge to recognize the opportunities for success. As a result, the practitioner will need to set aside time in his/her shedule to reflect, to develop and understand the educational setting, and to wonder, creating the stage for inquiry.

Blogs for Leaders in Education

Writing and rethinking the stages of inquiry enables the practitioner to organize the questions and supporting data. Using weblogs “blogs” as the platform for writing is convenient and shared if desired. The blog is available at any computer that has a internet connection, including a smart phone. Additionally, the blog privacy can be set for a select audience allowing comments, to set as totally private or public.
